There has been much talk about the effects of ethanol in gasoline and diesel fuel, as well as discussions about the merits of biodiesel or similar diesel blends. Because it is difficult to know exactly what is being pumped into your fuel tank, we want to inform you that Viking Yachts designs and manufactures its own fiberglass fuel tanks to the resin and thickness specifications provided to us by Ashland Composite Polymer, the company that supplies us with the appropriate resin materials. The result is Viking tanks can handle ethanol enhanced fuels.
Properly designed and fabricated fiberglass reinforced plastic marine fuel tanks made out of Ashland’s HETRON LB6806-182 or HETRON FR998 INF epoxy vinyl ester resin are recommended for use with marine fuels including gasoline, 15 percent (E15) ethanol containing gasoline, 85 percent ethanol (E85) containing gasoline, diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel. In addition to employing these resins in the manufacture of our Viking fuel tanks, Ashland also recommends that a corrosion barrier be in place consisting of a minimum of one layer of C-glass veil backed by a minimum of 100 mils of chopped strand glass. All Viking fuel tanks comply with Ashland requirements to ensure our fuel tanks will provide continuous service.
