Clean Sweep 7/16/2013
Marine growth on the boat's bottom is a drag on performance, which translates into higher fuel consumption. There is no economy realized by shortchanging bottom and running gear maintenance.

Northern boats are usually prepped for spring launch that will get them through the summer and fall season. Southern boats that spend 12 months in the water are best served with twice yearly haul outs to clean the bottom and check over the appendages.

An easy way to check the overall condition of the bottom is to verify the engines turn up to full RPM, something that you can do on the way back to the slip after a day on the water. If the engines miss the mark, the most common reason is bottom fouling or scale on the propellers.
